Ravenna 104k RUSA Route # 1412 |
Howe TX |
Controls: Howe & Ravenna. Starts from the Exxon / Kwik Chek in Howe at US-75 & Haning (northeast corner). Park on Haning St, a couple blocks east, just east of TX-5. This route is on mostly low traffic FM & country roads. The exception is FM-902 near the start/finish. It can be somewhat busy depending on the day & time (busy is relative...it's still a small country town, so nothing like "city busy"!). The turn-around control is at a small cafe with inconsistent days/hours. If the cafe is closed when you arrive, drop a postcard in the mail at the Post Office across the street. My address is on the control cards. Services are available at Bells (14 miles before & after Ravenna). Plan accordingly in case the Cafe is closed. Map files: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/920338 |

Almost all of this route is on TX-289 & TX-56. 289 is regarded as the smoothest road in Grayson County & has a wide shoulder. Map files: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/12599 |

Talihina OK |
Controls: Talihina, Wilhelmena Lodge & Mena. There is also an information control on the byway. The outbound portion of this route is on the famous "Talimena Scenic Byway". It is regarded by many (including PAC Tour riders) as the toughest 50 miles in America! One of it's nicknames ia the 5-55 ride, as most of the ride you are going 5mph uphill, or 55mph downhill. It is a tough route. Bring your climbing legs (and gears), but the scenery is breathtaking. If you have time, stop along the pull-outs & enjoy the views. The controls on the Byway are not time controlled. The 1st control with time constraints is Mena. The return is easier, as it travels on the low-road on the south side of the mountain, but still not flat. Map files: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/124849 |
